How to Choose the Best Crabs

When it comes to buying crabs, ensure you choose the best. This is done by buying the freshest and fleshiest. You can choose the best crabs through the following ways.

To many, the star ingredient is undoubtedly the mud crab. Sri Lanka enjoys the favor of exporting the larger varieties of the same. Where you are eating it from notwithstanding, you will need the meatiest ones to give the most bang for the buck. However, choosing crabs by how big they are is not the best way always. You will be disappointed if you choose the freshly molted ones since as you will find out, they can barely fill their shells. The following tips will empower you when it comes to choosing your crab.

The first thing that is necessary to consider is to look at where the crabs are kept. Consider the ones that are kept in a dry place. This is because the ones stored in water tanks will use up more energy and end up losing their energy reserves more rapidly. You can solicit information from the seller concerning when the crabs were caught. If the days after being caught exceed two, look the other way.

Do not ignore the crab’s activity level. Your choice of crab should not be dead or dying.A live crab is what you want. All that is required for the carcass to turn bad is a few hours.Your choice should be the ones that are feisty and aggressive. If there aren’t any that are feisty and aggressive, choose the ones that are at least moving.

Another thing that you will need to do is to inspect the crab’s belly. Pay special attention to the underbelly, with a special emphasis on the light-colored triangular flap. Females are different from males since their bellies are wider and rounded. A yellow tinted bulging firm belly is characteristic of a fleshly crab. Using a finger to test the firmness if a sure way to test the belly.

Choose crabs that have dull shells.Don’t go for the bright ones. The ones displaying battle scars or even scratches are better by far.If a shell is worn out, it means the crab is about to molt and shed the shell it has, and it is also fleshy. It is also helpful to suss out the smell.

The last way you can use to check the crab before buying is by checking the crab’s claw. If a crab is full grown, it is very evident from a simple look at the crab’s claws. The right claw being the one used to crush prey should be checked. Is there any sign of blunt or flattered teeth?
